The Maker

The Wilfer workshop was founded in 1905 in Möhrendorf, near Nuremberg, Bavaria. It is now in its fourth generation. Every instrument is hand-carved from old, well-seasoned European tonewoods: spruce tops, flamed maple backs and ribs. More about the workshop.

The Gofriller Model

The Gofriller model follows the design of Matteo Goffriller, an 18th-century Venetian luthier. His cellos are known for their broad lower bout and elongated centre bouts, which produce an unusually open and powerful response in the lower strings. Several of the world's leading solo cellists play original Goffriller instruments as their primary concert instruments. More about Matteo Goffriller.

My Assessment

I have played this cello. The C and G strings have real depth that carries across a room. The A string sings clearly without losing body. At full volume the instrument opens up further.

After getting the cello, I had it set up by a luthier. The bridge, soundpost and action are properly fitted. It is ready to play from day one.
