ABRSM Cello Exam Pieces Grade 3-ich liebe dich

15th February 2014

15th February 2014 – To be honest, a piece like that for a young child is somewhat beyond their basic appreciation. This means that the music has to be contextualised to their level of life experience.

Cello Lesson - D Minor Scale for Two Octaves

30th January 2014

30th January 2014: A simple video of learning the D Minor scale on the cello. You can notice better confidence on the cello and the ability to handle greater complexity of left hand movements.

Samuel Goh 1st Cello Public Performance - Men of Harlech

September 2013

Personal milestone of Samuel as this is his 1st public performance in one of the student concerts organised by my music teacher friends. Very proud of him (and not just because he is my son) and I hope he will remember the experience in the years to come as he grows up.

To be honest, it was prepared somewhat in a hurry so I decided to use a cello duet in place of a piano accompaniment as its just so much easier to make the necessary practice arrangements at home.

He has learnt the cello just over a year in this video.

Playing D Major Scale (1 Octave) on the Cello

February 2013

This is the progress of Samuel about 6 months into learning the cello. You can see the basics of bow and hand positions are being established.

It is such a joy to see a learner interacting with the cello and listening intently to what is being produced. Certainly better than just passively watching the TV. It takes effort and a amazing number of elements coming together to produce a simple scale as a beginner!

Fun Minus 1 Track Playalong

November 2012

A very fun video of using a minus-1 playalong track for learning. It can definitely add a level of interest to the student if used in a sensible manner. If you are not aware, a minus-1 track is basically the accompaniment music minus the main melody line which in this case is held by the cello.

And yes, the person clapping is Samuel’s brother, Jeremy.

Samuel 1st Ever Lesson (Open String Duet For 2 Cellos)

August 2012

This is actually a memorable short video of Samuel’s 1st lesson with me as he starts on his musical journey. It happened on the 1st August 2012. Apologies for the quality as the video was recorded based on the prevailing mobile phone recording technologies that I possess during that period of time.

Just a simple duet to get things started. I believe in starting students early in learning to play together as it activates certain basic principles of musicianship.
